Paltik Families

HD, 60 minutes, Jason Fox and Roel Arcilla

DESCRIPTION: A visual essay set in the days leading up to local elections across the Philippines, Paltik Families follows the Arcillas, a family engaged in an illegal network of counterfeit Colt .45 gun manufacturers, and the Duranos, a prominent political family running for reelection. Part musical, part historical examination, this film uses the centennial anniversary of the Colt .45’s introduction to the Philippines to frame the gun as an object through which stories are shaped in order to hide the histories and legacies that pass through it. The film is guided by the Filipino and American filmmakers’ shared desire to sort through the debris, both tangible and elusive, that extends into the present from the United States' earliest presence in the Philippines over a century ago, paying particular attention to its ongoing effects upon democracy, health, and migrant labor.
